Chinese Medicine Appointments

Chinese Medicine is an ancient and traditional system of healthcare that focuses on restoring balance within the body to support health, function, and well-being. Central to this approach is the understanding of Yin and Yang and the healthy movement of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body. When these aspects of Yin and Yang are balanced, the body is better able to regulate itself and adapt to its physical and emotional demands. When balance is disrupted, discomfort or reduced function may occur.

Chinese Medicine also emphasises the free flow of Qi and blood. Treatment aims to support circulation and regulation so the body can respond more effectively to stress, injury, or ongoing strain.

Diagnosis, assessment and treatment are guided by the principle of treating both the cause (the root) and the symptoms (the branch):

  • The root – underlying functional patterns contributing to imbalance

  • The branch – the current symptoms or areas of concern

By addressing both, Chinese Medicine can not only support symptom relief but also longer-term functional balance and resilience.

Step 1: Diagnosis and Assessment
Chinese Medicine assessment is functional and pattern-based, and not a biomedical diagnosis. Instead, an assessment focuses on identifying Chinese Medicine patterns of disharmony that describe how body systems are functioning together.
Assessment may include:

  • A detailed health history and discussion of current concerns

  • Observation of posture, movement, skin tone, and general vitality

  • Gentle palpation of muscles, tissues, and areas of discomfort

  • Traditional observations: tongue and pulse assessment

  • Consideration of lifestyle factors: sleep, stress, digestion, activity levels, and recovery

This information guides treatment planning in a way that supports well-being.

Step 2: Treatment modalities:

  • Acupuncture - Use of fine, sterile, single-use needles to support regulation of the nervous system, circulation, pain modulation, and overall well-being.

  • Tuina (Chinese Remedial Massage) - Structured hands-on therapy using specific techniques to support soft-tissue health, mobility, circulation, and relaxation.

  • Cupping Therapy - Gentle suction to the skin to support circulation, tissue mobility, and muscular recovery, used where clinically appropriate.

  • Lifestyle and Nutritional Guidance - Advice around sleep, stress management, movement, and recovery are tailored to suit the individual

All treatments are provided within the professional scope of practice and with informed consent.

Step 3: Patient-Focused Care
Chinese Medicine places strong emphasis on patient-centred and collaborative care. Each person’s experience, health history, and goals are respected and incorporated into treatment planning.
This approach includes:

  • Clear explanation of assessment findings and treatment options

  • Respect for patient choice, comfort, and consent

  • Trauma-informed and culturally respectful practice

  • Ongoing review and adjustment of care based on patient feedback

Patients are encouraged to actively participate in their care, supporting self-awareness, confidence, and long-term well-being.
